2025 EWM TREATMENT INFORMATION FOR LOST LAND AND TEAL LAKE RESIDENTS
The Teal, Lost Land and Ghost Lakes Improvement Association Inc. along with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Northwest Regional Planning Commission, and Schmidt’s Aquatic LLC proposes to chemically treat approximately 4.8 acres on Lost Land Lake and 7 acres on Teal Lake to control the aquatic invasive species, Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM). The Teal, Lost Land and Ghost Lakes Improvement Association Inc. proposes to conduct applications of ProcellaCOR EC to be performed by the chemical applicator, Schmidt’s Aquatic LLC. The anticipated treatment date, weather permitting, will be in early June, 2025. Notification of the exact dates of treatment and water use restrictions for ProcellaCOR EC will be posted in the treatment area, and all public access entries. The water use restrictions associated with use of ProcellaCOR EC are noted below:

  • There are no swimming, fishing, or other recreational restrictions.
  • Do not use water from treated area for non-turf irrigation (Gardens) purposes for 3 days.
  • You may however irrigate turf (Grass) immediately following applications.

KEY POINTS ABOUT THE 2025 TREATMENT PLAN

  • Targeted Areas: Focus on high-traffic zones where boat movement increases the risk of EWM spread.
  • New Treatment Zones: Locations are intentionally far from 2024 treatment areas to minimize repeated herbicide exposure.
  • Habitat Protection: Treatment areas are spaced apart, allowing fish and other aquatic species to move freely during treatments.
  • Volunteer Opportunities: Hand-pulling/harvesting efforts will continue for smaller, manageable zones.
  • Grant Utilization: This approach ensures full use of the current AIS control grant.

After the 2025 Treatment:

  • After 2025, there will be three years of monitoring only (no herbicides).
  • Late-season bed mapping surveys will track regrowth and inform future management each year.

Our DNR specialist, Ben Schleppenbach,  has committed to revisiting management options if EWM again reaches navigational impairment levels during these three years of monitoring and has made the following comments regarding further chemical treatment after 2025:

  • After any herbicide treatments, we closely monitor native plant recovery through surveys to ensure no suppression of historical levels before considering further treatments. The goal remains 3–5 years of EWM relief without harming native species. If this isn’t achieved, we’ll need to reassess future strategies.
  • It’s crucial that invasive species management doesn’t compromise native ecosystems. Past whole-lake herbicide treatments have negatively affected native plants, and while PI surveys track vegetation, they don’t capture potential impacts on lower trophic levels like zooplankton, phytoplankton, or young fish. These factors should be part of our long-term ecological planning.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  CLEAN BOATS, CLEAN WATERS WATER CRAFT INSPECTION
The Quiet Lakes Improvement Association is looking for volunteers this fishing season to monitor our boat launches. We are asking volunteers if they can monitor the launches one to two times per month for 4 to 6 hours each time. If you would like to be a volunteer but would like to spend  more or less time to monitor that is not an issue. We will work with each volunteer to accommodate your schedule. The job consists of monitoring boats going in and out of our lakes for weeds to reduce the spread of the invasive  species. If you are interested or have questions call or text Greg Wassilkowsky at 331/271-4842 or email  Quietlakestlg@gmail.com.
